The collection consists of a photocopy of a chapter from his autobiography, "Death of Sister Helen." Covering 1874 through 1876, the chapter details the death of his sister in Indianapoilis, her funeral at Trinity Methodist Episcopal Church, and burial at Crown Hill Cemetery. It includes a sermon preached by Reverend Bayliss on the atmosphere of hate and violence during the Reconstruction.

Twitchell was born in Vermont and served during the Civil War in the Vermont Infantry and as a captain in the 109th Colored Infantry. After the war he settled in Louisiana as a planter. He attended the 1876 Constitutional Convention, later became the leader of the Republican Party in the state, and in 1871 was elected to the state senate.
